Originally Pilates’ system was known as Contrology or "the art of control". Pilates believed that "our muscle should obey our will"; no movement should be executed in a haphazard or unconscious way. This mind/body connection results in greater body awareness, ensuring that each movement is performed with control and precision. Moving muscles in a smooth, controlled and conscious manner makes the body work harder and thus makes our muscles stronger.
Pilates is effective for people of all ages and fitness levels, and depending on your needs you will get a workout that is vigorous and challenging or gentle and restorative. Pilates exercises can improve sports performance and help prevent injury for golf, tennis, running, boxing or any other activity that requires a strong and flexible core. Regular gym exercisers will get the toned abdominals and strength that they seek. Building a strong core is also essential for those with chronic lower back issues, as weakness in the abdominals contributes to tightness and pain in the lower back. Pilates can even help reduce stress.
