Pilates is a unique physical discipline that exercises both mind and body in order to enhance strength and flexibility. Joseph H. Pilates, who founded this system over 90 years ago, believed that all movement generated from the center of the body or "the core". He believed that building strength in the abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks enhances performance of daily activities and improves alignment and posture.

"In 10 sessions you will feel the difference;

In 20 sessions you will see the difference, and

In 30 sessions you will have a whole new body"

Joseph H. Pilates

Originally Pilates’ system was known as Contrology or "the art of control". Pilates believed that "our muscle should obey our will"; no movement should be executed in a haphazard or unconscious way. This mind/body connection results in greater body awareness, ensuring that each movement is performed with control and precision. Moving muscles in a smooth, controlled and conscious manner makes the body work harder and thus makes our muscles stronger.

TESTIMONIAL

As a former professional ballet dancer with one bad knee, I wanted a program that was both rigorous and safe -- and that accommodated a very busy schedule. Michelle's expertise and scheduling flexibility mean that I never have to compromise on fitness training.

Pilates is effective for people of all ages and fitness levels, and depending on your needs you will get a workout that is vigorous and challenging or gentle and restorative. Pilates exercises can improve sports performance and help prevent injury for golf, tennis, running, boxing or any other activity that requires a strong and flexible core. Regular gym exercisers will get the toned abdominals and strength that they seek. Building a strong core is also essential for those with chronic lower back issues, as weakness in the abdominals contributes to tightness and pain in the lower back. Pilates can even help reduce stress.
